What is a Deep Plane Neck Lift?

A neck lift removes excess skin and fat from around your jawline to reduce the signs of aging in the lower part of the face. The procedure is often done as part of a face-lift.

A deep plane neck lift sculpts and refines the neck's contours for a firming effect. The layers of the neck are lifted to achieve smooth definition, including the following:

  • Skin
  • Muscle
  • Fat
  • Glands
  • Connective tissue

The effect is an attractive, refined neck and jawline for a more elegant and timeless profile.

How is a Deep Plane Neck Lift Different from Neck Liposuction?

Liposuction is the most commonly used procedure for neck rejuvenation. During liposuction, Dr. Shapiro makes a tiny incision behind each ear and under the chin, then suctions fat from the jaw line and beneath the chin. Liposuction can give you a more defined neck if your skin is resilient and your issue is fullness due to fat.

However, liposuction won't correct structural issues contributing to your neck's appearance and doesn’t remove excess skin.

A deep plane neck lift is different from neck liposuction in that:

  • A deep neck lift manipulates the skin, muscle, fat, connective tissue, and glands to sculpt the neckline and jawline
  • Neck liposuction removes pockets of fat on the neck and the jawline
  • A deep neck lift will last between ten and fifteen years
  • Neck liposuction lasts seven to ten years
  • After a deep plane neck lift, most patients can return to sedentary work within two weeks and can return to exercise within one month
  • After neck liposuction, most patients can return to sedentary work within one week and can return to exercise within three weeks

Am I A Good Candidate For A Deep Plane Neck Lift?

Because a deep plane neck lift reshapes neck contours but doesn’t address loose, droopy skin, it is best for younger patients under 40 with genetically heavy necks. Patients over 40 with loose, sagging skin are the best candidates for a deep plane facelift combined with a deep neck lift.

The best candidates for a deep plane neck lift should meet the following requirements:

  • Are in good physical health
  • Have no severe medical concerns
  • Do not smoke
  • Have lost definition in the jawline
  • Have a thicker or heavy neck contour

How is a Deep Plane Neck Lift Performed?

During your consultation with Dr. Shapiro, he will discuss your aesthetic goals and examine your skin and neck. After reviewing your surgical and medical history, Dr. Shapiro will make his recommendations and explain the procedure in detail.

Your neck lift will be performed under general anesthesia and will last approximately one hour. Dr. Shapiro makes a single once-inch incision hidden beneath the chin rather than traditional facelift incisions around the ears.

Using this incision, he will lift the layers of the neck, contouring it for a smooth and youthful neckline and jawline. Dr. Shapiro removes superficial and deep fat on the neck and under the chin to lift and tighten the neck muscles.

Deep Plane Neck Lift Recovery and Results

After your deep neck lift, expect up to two weeks of downtime, during which you’ll rest and recuperate as your body heals. Some examples of what else you should expect from deep plane neck lift recovery include the following:

  • Bruising and swelling, which you can treat with over-the-counter medication
  • You’ll need to sleep with your head elevated
  • Do not lift anything heavy or exert yourself as you’re healing
  • You might need to wear a neck compression garment to help reduce swelling
  • Don’t twist or bend your neck
  • Avoid exercise that promotes additional blood flow for at least two weeks

Final results will take up to six months to appear. At that point, you should be able to resume vigorous activities such as exercising. Your scar will be well-hidden in the lines under the chin and fade over six months to one year.

Some tips for optimal scar recovery include:

  • Protect your skin from the sun
  • Don't wear clothing that is pulled over your head
  • Be gentle with your surgical incisions
